Coaching Football Defense – Hold the Line

Coaching Football DefenseWhen coaching football defense, try this football drill with your team.  It gives everyone a chance to play the line.

Split your football team in half and form two equal lines facing each other. Try to make sure guys facing each other are close in size. Next have one of the football coaches stand about five yards behind one of the lines. Tell this line that they are offense and need to protect the coach. Tell the other line they are defense and need to get through the line and try to get the coach.

On “go”, start to count aloud, One one thousand, Two one thousand and so on. The goal is to hold the defense for as many seconds as possible. Both sides know how long it took and try to do better each time. Let each side be offense about 10 times each and at the end compare the best times.

By the way I have never had an offense protect me for more than 6 seconds. Usually about 2 – 4 seconds is average. The football coach remains stationary when doing this football drill. The players like this drill as it gives all of them a chance to play the line.
