From Stu…
Here’s my idea to contribute to the football coaching tips. This competition is the next to the last drill of football practice.

We have a number of those Big Block dummies typically used for blocking and tackling practice.  In our practices, we divide into several balanced groups (each group has a similar number of players who typically play each position….generally four to a group).

Going from sideline to sideline, all the players line up on one sideline facing the field (with each group in a straight line).  Holding the dummy off the ground in front of him, the first player runs to the other side line, drops the dummy off and runs back.  The next player runs down, picks up the dummy and carries it back to the start in the same manner.  The next player carries it back down and returns.

This cycle continues until each player in the group has gone five times.  The winning team gets to watch the rest of the squad do the last running football drill of the day (usually suicides).

I like this football drill because it is not only a running/conditioning drill, but it also helps to strengthen the kids upper bodies.  The kids love the competition and chance to get out of a drill most don’t like.  In addition, they really get into beating their friends.
