The ball doesn’t always come in an optimum spot to catch it.  This football catching drill with high and low passing is a great drill for just this situation.

Football CAtching DrillsWhat you need – Two QB’s side by side, and lines for receivers on the left and on the right.

How this drill works – As the receivers go out for their pass patterns, the quarterback will drop back and then throw to the receiver.  Instead of throwing a picture perfect pass, the QB will throw it over the head of the player (forcing them to adjust their catching position), or below the waist (again, an adjustment needs to be made).

Passes rarely come in the perfect spot – because the QB doesn’t always have perfect accuracy or he is under pressure, or because the optimum place for his receiver is the optimum place for the defender as well.  In this case, the QB’s must throw the ball to where only his receiver can catch it, and the receiver needs to be able to bring the ball in, no matter where it is thrown.

Result – Your receivers will understand the fundamentals of catching no matter where the ball comes in from the quarterback.  This football drill will be very valuable for your receivers.
