This idea for football coaching drills comes courtesy of Eddie, one of my subscribers. Give this football drill a try with your linemen.
From Eddie…
I have a football drill that I would like to share with you. I call it Bust-a-Move. It is good for both offensive and defensive lineman; since I have coached both sides of the line.
It is a 2 man pass block, pass rush football drill. The football coach will choose an offensive lineman and a defensive lineman. He will then set up 3 cones in a semi circle in a five yard area. (Yes, this is only 5 yards but it is fast and it works on speed, quickness, and foot movement.) The coach will set up a stand up dummy or a body 7 yards from L.O.S. The offensive lineman will set up in a 2 point stance on L.O.S. The defensive lineman will line up outside the 1st cone on L.O.S. The coach will blow the whistle or call a cadence. The defensive lineman is to rush around the cones trying to get to the dummy keeping in mind that he only rushes deeper than the QB’s back shoulder closing from the outside in. The offensive lineman is to back peddle to the last cone and engage the defensive lineman keeping his body in between the DL and the QB.
P.S. The reason you set the cones up in a semi circle is the OL is at a disadvantage trying to backpeddle when the DL is sprinting forward.
