Football Coaching Philosophy – Little Moments
I’ve coached football at every level except college and pro. One thing occurred to me while watching one of my assistants, who was using terminology that to him seemed second nature, but to an 8 yr old was terribly confusing. My football coaching philosophy changed from that day forward.

I decided to change my approach to include *”little moments” where I teach the boys the terms coaches use every day.
*These are perfect for those beginning age groups.*
Outside: The direction from the placement of the football to the sideline either direction.
Inside: The direction from the sideline to the placement of the football.
Teaching Tool: Get your players used to hearing those terms when referencing offensive/defensive line placement, I.e. Your “inside” shoulder on the tackle’s “outside” shoulder. Reinforce those terms at least twice a week by asking them as a unit where’s the outside? Where’s the inside?
As a youth football coach, always keep in mind that what you think might be a simple term could be totally foreign to a young kid.
