Many coaches struggle with coming up with fresh ideas for football defensive back drills.  Here is one suggestion sent to me by one of my subscribers.  Give this football drill a try with your team.Football Defensive Back Drills

From Marty…
Linebacker box football drill teaches to read the linemen, especially if its a pulling team, wing t, etc.

You make a box and remove the bottom line so know the box has 3 sides, starting at the left open end name the point 1 and then the corner 2 the flate angle 3 the opposite corner 4, and the ending point 5.

You then place a lineman in the open end and parallel to the 1 and 5 points.

Then place a backer 4 to 5 yards from the lineman so that the box still shows between the 2 players and is still area 1 and 2 are parallel to the lineman’s shoulders.

A football coach will stand behind the defensive player, and show 1 of 5 numbers to the offensive linemen only and the backer must respond appropriately.

Lineman Duties
1. first move by the lineman would be a flat step, 1 is to mimic a pull of a guard or center etc.
2. is an angle block where linemen must get out in front of a backer at an angle and cut him off
3. is a straight to backer plung block
4. is the same as 2 but on the opposite side
5. is the same as 1 but on the opposite side

Backer Response
1. the backer must read and beat the lineman to a line of scrimmage not to exceed 20
2. the backer must no be blocked out but must use his hands to control the inside or outside pending defense type of his area
3. must be able to step up and take on the line containing his area and coming off of blocks
4. is the same as 2 but opposite side
5. is the same as 1 but opposite side

You may also add a running back to help the linebacker with shedding the lineman properly.
