Special thanks to Bronx for sending this one in. If you’re looking for a fresh idea for [tag]football drills[/tag], give this one a try!
Focus: Grip strength
Target: All positions, emphasis OL
Frequency: Every day
One of the most overlooked aspects of the game of [tag]football[/tag] is grip strength. While all positions at some point of the game or another requires the player to use their hands and grasp(tackling, blocking, catching, etc.) [tag]football coach[/tag]es very rarely put emphasis on this aspect. So here’s a quick tip that will help you develop grip strength with your own players.
1. Take a few old tennis balls and have your players squeeze out 10-15 reps trying to smash the ball as far down as possible.
2. Then have them go through each finger, while holding the ball in hand, and do about 5 reps individually with each one. This won’t be easy so have them just squeeze as much as they can.
3. After 3-4 quick sets, do resistance training with the balls by having them clamp down on the ball with their entire hand, holding for 10-15 seconds with all their might. Do this about 5 times with a 10 second rest in between.
So that’s that, it’s really quick, great for [tag]football warm-ups[/tag], and will increase a major aspect of the game that will give your guys the edge!
