Football Drills – Proper Defensive Position

This is one of the football drills that I have used from the very beginning. Use this at the start of every football practice to reinforce proper defensive position, moving lateral to play and pursuit through line to make a proper tackle.

After stretching have the players line up in rows of five. Then do 15 yards of high knees, heel clicks, backpedal, etc . Then put it to use in this football drill.

Set up four cones in a square 10 yards apart. Set a tackling dummy 7 yards deep from the top of the square in center. Two football coaches take blocking pads and set up at top right cone.  Players line up at top left cone.Football Drills

On whistle a player will backpedal in defensive position to bottom left cone, then heel click(slide) in same defense position to bottom right cone, then player accelerates ten yards to waiting coaches with pads.  Player gets low and uses his hands to split blockers and then a straight on tackle on dummy keeping low with head up, back straight and dummy centered as they make a form tackle.
