Football Offense – Handoff Drill

One of the football offense drills that I like to use is a handoff drill.  This football drill also helps with conditioning, and the kids don’t get bored with conditioning.

I separate my backs and quarterbacks into two groups, leaving them to sprint towards one another and hand the ball off.

We start slow, just to teach the fundamentals, how to hand off to the backs and how the backs should be receiving the handoff.  Gradually pick the pace up until we are at game speed.  After they hand the ball off they will move to the back of the line and the person handing the ball off this time will be receiving the ball the next time.

This seems to help the quarterbacks understand how to hand the ball off; if they take a handoff they understand how difficult that a bad transfer from him to the back can be to handle.

The backs also get a better understanding of how hard it is for a quarterback to get the football into the bread basket if they don’t position themselves for the handoff.  So both groups get a better understanding of what they need to do for the other to be successful.
