If you’re looking for a high intensity, game situation football drill for running, blocking and tackling, try this all in one drill.  It is a football practice plans idea that will liven up your practices!

  • 1 ball carrier, 1 lead blocker, 2 defenders.
  • Place 2 cones (or we use padded shields) about 3 yards apart 10 to 20 yards from center of the LOS.
  • Hand or toss the football to ball carrier like on sweep around end.
  • Ball carrier must run through cones; the other players don’t have to.
  • Fullback lead blocks on defenders who start out in noseguard and middle linebacker positions.

If ball carrier makes it through cones, don’t stop, have him race back to the middle of field to bring the ball back.  This helps  with handoffs, pitches, lead blocking, combo blocking, reading blocks, cutbacks, fending off blocks, tackling, taking proper angles, jumping back up after getting knocked down,  giving chase, and playing to the whistle.

The kids will want to do this drill all the time but be smart; you are risking injury with live play. The kids love it.
