This is a football drill from my football special teams drills that pits the returner against two special teams contain men.
What you need – Two contain men running down the field. One returner. Set up pylons to indicate where the contain men need to keep the runner.
How this drill works – The ball is kicked (or thrown) down to the returner, and as soon as it is kicked, the contain men must get down the field to prevent the returner from getting to the outside of them.
The returner will try to get to the outside in this drill, and they must try to go outside of the cones to do so. The contain men must not let the returner get outside of them, or they will be penalized with conditioning drills.
The contain men must not take a direct angle to the ball, they need to angle their attack. If they go directly at the runner, they risk the runner just blowing right by them on the outside. Teach your players to patrol their lane first, until they have to make a last minute cut.
Results – This drill is going to help teach your players the importance of contain – in any aspect of the game.
