When playing football, it is essential that you have a quarterback who can think fast and act even faster. The following football speed drills are a great way to ensure your quarterback improves his quick passing skills. Make sure to practice each of these football speed drills quickly and multiple times in order to gain their full effect.Football Speed Drills

The first of the football speed drills is called “One Knee”. For this drill, have your quarterback stand with his throwing side knee down on the grass, and have a partner stand approximately 10 yards away, facing the quarterback. Begin by placing the ball beside the quarterback within grasp of his throwing hand.

At your whistle, the player is to pick up the ball with one hand, lift it high above his head with both hands, and throw it to a partner. When throwing, make sure your quarterback leads with his elbow and uses his arm only, as this drill aims to develop a stronger arm and quick throwing reflexes.

For the next speed drill, called the “Quick Release” drill, have your quarterback and his partner stand facing each other anywhere from 5 to 10 yards apart. Have both players sprint side-to-side in the same direction while quickly throwing the ball between them. The goal of this drill is to release the ball as quickly as possible, snapping it back to the other player while maintaining a constant running speed. Make sure both players are standing with their hips and shoulder square to their throwing target.
