Robert, one of my subscribers, came up with some great suggestions for football tackling drills. Keep ‘em coming!
From Robert…
Fire Out and Tackle Drill
Objective: This football drill teaches lineman the importance of watching the ball, firing out, and tackling.
Items Needed: 6 shields
Three lines of football players (could be defensive lineman or even linebackers) across from three separate shields held by players or coaches. Approximately four yards behind the first set up shields is another shield held by a player or football coach. This shield is slightly to the right or left of the first shield.
An additional coach lines up on the line of scrimmage and initiates a cadence. When the ball is snapped, the player fires off the ball and hits the shield in front of him with his left (or right) shoulder (depending on which way he is going) and aims for the second shield. He then drives into the second shield delivering a blow and driving the shield backwards as if he is tackling it.
Points to stress: get off the ball quickly but do not go off sides. Go through the shoulder of the man holding the shield and maintain your balance. Drive thru the shield who is acting like a ball carrier.
