I got the inspiration for this football coaching tip from Ted, one of my subscribers. It includes some fresh ideas for football training drills. Try it out and let me know what you think!
From Ted…
We call this football drill–a circle drill.
After a proper hitting progression and usually about 3 or 4 weeks into practice, we ask the boys to get in a group of 5, with one guy on the middle and the other 4 in a square pattern around him.
Each of the boys, including the one in the middle are asked to “chug” their feet and stay with low hips and head up (in an athletic stance). The boy in the middle spins every one or two seconds to face someone else in the group. When the coach whistles, whoever the guy in the middle is facing, he goes and blocks until the whistle blows again. (He drives his opponent backwards until the second whistle.) He then returns to the middle, until he has made 4 blocks and then we switch the middle man.
We use this football drill once per week, usually Tuesday of a Friday game week and it usually produces some fairly intense contact.
