I have formulated some new football training drills. This drill for the receivers is for our individual period. What it encompasses is the routes that we run most frequently–our bead and butter. These are the ones we want to run with our closed and be perfect at at. I call it “Cumulative Route Running Drill” or CRD for short.
The drill starts off with receivers in a line (or two depending on number of quarterbacks) in their designated position. On cadence or on the coach’s signal the receiver will run a progression of four routes. In this case we will use the Hitch, Jet, Out and Fly.
Four footballs are needed as four throws will be made. On “go” receiver runs a hitch makes catch, sprints to designated mark drops ball goes directly into next route and catches next ball sprints to next mark again right into next route etc. with the last route being the fly that we catch and sprint into the end zone.
Primary coaching fundamentals, catching the ball, secure and tuck away, run after catch and towards end of route drill working the sideline and over the shoulder. As they get better at this add some other elements as defenders to try and disrupt the routes catching in traffic etc.
