Football Training Drills – Drills for Safeties
Special thanks to Mark for sending this one in. If you’re looking for football training drills, try this out!
I use this football drill for my safeties.
Take two bags and set them up about 20 yds apart. Have a defender stand between the bags chopping his feet. A football coach will stand approximately 20 yds away from the defender facing him. The coach will assume the QB position as if he is to pass.
Have the defender yell pass while chopping his feet. The coach will throw the football at one of the bags. The safety must knock the ball away befor it hits the bag.
We teach our kids to reach and swat at the ball. If they feel they are beat and the “receiver” will catch the ball then they are to tackle the bag and rake down on the receiver as to make a fumble or incomplete pass.
We also have them intercept, call BINGO when they intercept, and run for a touchdown. We keep points. If you swat the ball, you get 4 pts. If you get beat and make a good tackle, 2pts. When we do the interception drill sometimes we will have a coach with a shield — then the player intercepts he gets 3 pts, if he keeps his feet while the coach hits him with tha arm pad he gets 1 pt. If he gets hit and uses a spin technique and maintains his feet and forward progress, he will receive 2pts. At the end of practice the top 2 winners in points get a prize.
