I received this suggestion for football youth coaching from Frank. Give this a try when you are evaluating your players’ skills. Great assessment tool.
From Frank,
I coach Jr division 7-9 yr. olds. I have a fun football drill.
Set out 4 cones about 10 yards apart making a square.
Lay out the first set of cones.
The player gets in a three point stance as a defensive lineman.
Another kid lines up between the second set of cones as if he were safety or linebacker.
The coach is facing the lineman with a running back lined up behind him about 3 yards.
The coach tells back which way to go, left or right, then calls cadence.
The back receives the ball, goes through while staying between cones.
The lineman must wrap up if he gets by. The 2nd player must assist. Whoever the back gets by does push ups.
After the drill, the runner goes to back 2 cones and players shift forward.
The line is formed behind back.
This is a great evaluation drill. You really see who is aggressive, who has speed and proper form on line, and backfield defense.
