Getting a quick burst on the pass rush is key for defensive linemen. Use these free defensive drills for football practice and improve the skills of your defensive lineman.
What you need – You will need to set up a cone with a flag on it to be the quarterback. You can have a defensive lineman, and a coach with an arm dummy. A shoulder harness with a 5 or 10 pound sliding bar will be needed.
How this drill works – The object of the drill is to help build the quick burst reaction of defensive linemen. This drill is set up with the DL with a shoulder harness, and lined up to the outside shoulder of the coach. The coach will be ready with an arm dummy.
When the whistle blows, the defensive lineman will make a quick move on the dummy and then get to the QB.
Defensive linemen need a quick burst on order to pass the offensive linemen. It is this quick burst that gives them a head start on the pass rush. By having the shoulder harness attached to the body (or around the waist), resistance is provided, building more powerful quick twitch reaction.
Result – Defensive linemen will have a quick first step and can get to the quarterback a lot quicker.
