Here are free football drills that I use primarily for linemen, but any position would benefit from it. They teach speed, agility, ball control, & tackling.
Setup- Construct a box ~ 10 yard square with 4 cones
Drill- Have 2 players lay on their back in the middle of the box, head to head (helmet to helmet) so that their feet are facing opposite directions. They must keep their legs together and flat on the ground, with their hands/arms folded on their chest. The football coach will then drop the football onto either players chest (standing over them). The ball receiver must acquire the ball, roll over and move into a running position as quickly as possible, where the “defender” must roll out and try to tackle the “running back” before he can depart the “box”.
Tips- Do not tip off who is getting the ball, in fact I sometimes drop the ball right in the middle on top of their helmets, to see who can “fight”/”acquire” the ball.
The player who “acquires” the ball in this drill must run through the defenders side of the box to “score” (without getting tackled).
Comments- This football drill really helps to demonstrate how linemen must move quickly to the ball carrier-in the right direction (focusing on that belt buckle area) and be able to tackle the proper way (no arm tackling).
I use 2-3 coaches for this drill, and when we see problems, we pull that player to the side for 1 on 1 coaching for corrections, and then get them right back in the drill.
