Free Football Training Drills – Blocking and Find the Ball

I get many requests from coaches for free football training drills.  Try these two football drills to add conditioning, increase skills and to provide some fun at your next football practice.

One football drill that we use to help instill blocking in all the boys is to lay a tackling dummy on it’s side. The “defense” player starts by jumping the dummy and engaging the 3 “blockers” that are lined up directly behind each other about 2-3 yards apart.

The defense player’s goal is make it to a football coach at the back of line. The blockers have to use proper blocking technique, no blocking in the back, no holding, etc.

The boys love it and it not only teaches them to block, but it encourages teamwork, and it makes the defense player learn how to shed the blockers and spin out.

Here is another football practice drill that the kids seem to love.  I  call it Find the Ball.

Have 3 linebackers lay on their backs, helmets towards the line of scrimmage. Use cones to represent the o-line and have two running backs. When I blow the whistle, both running backs take off either in the same direction or opposite each other with one carrying the football.

The line backers have to get to their feet, find the back with the ball, and make the tackle.   It teaches the linebackers to find the ball. Plus the kids love it.
