Matthew sent these to me last week. These are free football training drills that don’t require a coaching PhD to figure out. Give them a try with your team.
From Matthew…
The 1st is a football tackling drill. I put the players face to face in a good hitting position. When I blow the whistle, both players tackle each other but DO NOT take them to the ground. The players focus on running their feet through the tackle and driving the other player back and staying square. I do not want them to turn their shoulders. I will also extend the drill and have the players stand side by side and turn into each other and drive straight back. Since I came up with this drill three years ago, I have seen my teams become better tacklers.
The second is a football drill that I do on defense with the front 7. When we do our inside run period with the defensive front 7, I will sometimes not use a football. The players have a hard time at first because they normally just concentrate on the ball. I like to do this to teach the positions responsibilities and how to take care of them first and not worry about the ball.
