We try to find ways to condition without running sprints constantly. Here is one of the football conditioning drills we use.

Every once in a while, we will divide the team into groups of 4 or 5 players.  The players start on one sideline.  Each team selects one member to start.  The first player sprints to the other sideline and back.  When he returns, he grasps hands with another member of his team.  They go together to the other sideline and back, holding hands all the while.  If they stop holding hands, they must return to the sideline and begin that leg again.

The two players get a third player, then a fourth until the entire group runs over and back holding hands together.  You’d be surprised how hard it is for 5 guys to turn around while holding hands!

When the whole group gets back, the first players drops off and the remaining group continues.  In this way each player runs the same number of sprints.  For more sprints, select larger teams.
