This football drill comes courtesy of one of my readers, Aaron.  It is ideal for an energetic new football coach to try out with his team.New Football Coach

From Aaron…
This drill is called “No Friends” and its designed to be aggressive in a player’s lateral movement.  This drill requires step over dummies, a football, and a coach.

The players will move laterally to the direction of the ball (side to side) while stepping over the dummies (placed hands length apart).  Here’s the catch.  In as much players involved in the drill (3 recommended), there are two more bags (situated at each end, equal distance to other bags).  Each player straddles a bag and moves in the direction signified by the coach.  Players speed will vary and may cause them to “bump, run, collide” into each other.

This is where “no friends” come into play.  Each player will try to keep their balance as well as moving in the direction given.  Players will be tested on their reaction and their lateral speed.  If someone is in your way “abruptly push them out of your way” all the while moving to the direction of the ball (left, left, left, right, right, left, left).  This allows the player to gain peripheral vision, balance (since others are trying to push you down), and good lateral movement.  This drill forces a player to use their hands, pushing on coming players lined up in this drill.  If a player falls, they are required to get up quickly regaining their place in the drill.

This drill should not last more than 12-15 seconds and the rotation should be constant.  A hype, energetic coach who is a good motivator would be good for this drill.  Designed for defensive players, could be simulated to reflect offensive as well.
