In the previous Lead Block drill, the fullback had to make a block and the RB needed to make a cut. Now the linebacker needs to meet the block and make the tackle, or give his teammates a chance. Here are practice drills for football for your linebackers.
What you need – Line up a fullback and a tail back in the backfield. You can use a quarterback, or you can start the ball in the RB’s hands. Have a blocking back, a running back, and two linebackers.
How this drill works – This football drill is for the linebackers. The purpose is for the linebacker to turn the running back inside where he has help.
It’s also good if the LB can meet the blocker and bust through it to make the tackle. This is what makes a linebacker good. The fullback will go to make a block, and the LB will take the outside shoulder of the blocker to push the ball back inside.
Once inside, the second linebacker has a chance to make a play on the ball. The linebacker being blocked should not allow the RB to get outside of the playing area.
Result – This drill teaches players to meet the lead block head on and how it can steer a play back into the middle where there is help.
