Here is a football drill for coaching youth football defense. We use it for teaching how to change direction on defense. It can be difficult explaining changing direction.
We call it churning your feet, short choppy steps, dropping your hips, no false steps–the Churning Drill.
1. Line your kids up in 4 lines or as many as you need about 3-4 yards apart
2. Have them run in place knees bent short & choppy
3. Then have them take off with no false steps about 5 to 7 yards drop your hips
4. Break them down in a good hitting position at the end.
You can add a lot to this football drill. Have them go right & left then also as they are getting better you can have them back pedal. Use step 2,3,4 and so on until they’re good at it.
Tackle a bag at the end or break on a pass, anything you can come up with to make sure no false steps. Put a bag behind them so if they false step their feet hit the bag.
