Using a Production Points System for Your Team

If you’re looking for a method to encourage your defensive youth football players to push even harder during the game, consider using a production points system.

Here’s an example of a production points system:

  • Defensive Touchdown = 10 points (for all players in on that play)
  • Caused Fumble = 5 points
  • Interception = 5 points
  • Sack = 5 points
  • Hatchet = 5 points
  • Fumble Recovery = 5 points
  • Tackle for a Loss = 3 points
  • Unassisted Tackle = 3 points
  • Assisted Tackle = 3 points
  • Pass Deflection = 2 points
  • Polish = 2 points
  • Missed Tackle = -1 point
  • Loaf = -5 points
  • Critical Mistake = -5 points
  • Missed Take-Away Opportunity = -10 points (for all players in on that play)

Production points provide a way to encourage youth football players to be proactive and make life tougher for the opposing team’s offense that evening, by both giving points and taking them away.

Do you employ this type of system with your youth football team’s defensive players? Sound off below and let us know why you think it’s a good idea—or a not-so-good one.
