In today’s video blog post, I want to share with you some excellent defensive line movement drills – the “Twist”, “Slant” and “Angle” movement drills.

Defensive Line Movement Drills:   “Twist” Drill

In the “Twist” drill, we work on our twists and stunts.

  • Send the defensive tackle through the B-gap, and his aiming point is the butt of the offensive tackle.
  • The tackle is going to take one step to set up the tackle and skim it tight off of the defensive tackle’s butt.

**One thing you’ve got to understand before we run this stunt – with a two-man surface, one of two things are going to happen:

  1. The center’s going to turn to him and he’s got to be ready to execute a pass rush move
  2. The center’s going to turn away and we ought to be able to push this pick off right here.

Defensive Line Movement Drills:   “Slant” Drill

  • Slant into the opposing gap inside.
  • Aim and point the cheek, the butt of the inside lineman.
  • The first step should be flat and then vertical.

**A coaching point – it’s hard to slant in the direction when you’ve got your opposite hand down. So we’d want to switch the stance, go inside foot back, inside hand down because that’s the way he’s going.

Defensive Line Movement Drills:   “Angle” Drill

  • Everybody’s angling out, and you’re probably bringing linebackers up in the middle.
  • You want the outside foot back, outside hand down to the way you’re going to step.
  • If you get any kind of down block, you want to be able to cross face. So you’re going to change your stances.
  • Ball’s still in here and we’re now going to angle.
