I’ve gotten a whole bunch of requests for football practice drills over the past few days. Here are some football drills that Jeff sent to me. I’ve included them below.
From Jeff…
Riccochet Drill - to work on shedding blocks and getting to the ball carrier
3 blockers and 1 ball carrier
1 line backer
Align 3 blockers 5 yards apart and 5 yards deep from each other, the ball carrier will be 5 yards behind the last blocker for this football drill.
First blocker will utilize a drive block, second blocker a hook (or reach block) the third will be a cut block (I usually have them crawl towrds the line backer to cut down on injuries).
The linebacker starts 5 yards in front of the first block, on the command he engages the first blocker, disengages and moves to the next block.
The linebacker then defates the block and moves to the next block.
The linebacker defeats the last block
When the linebacker defeats the last block, the ball carrier is then given the command and starts forward, the linebacker completes the football drill with a form tackle.
Key Drill - for middle linebackers to react to their keys
2 offensive lineman, a center, a ball carrier and 2 blocking dummies
The linebacker is instructed to read the head of the man who is the key. In this drill it is easy to use the center.
The offensive line is lined up with 2 Guards and a center, with a ball carrier 5 yards behind the center.
Two blocking dummies are set up in front of the guards. The linebacker lines up 5 yards deep in front of the center.
The coach stands behind the linebacker and signals the direction of the blocks.
The way I run this drill is to have the linebacker key on the centers head. On the command the center will either attack the blocking dummy with his head inside (for a dive type run) the linebacker then reacts and attacks the block (to spill or squeeze). Work on proper footwork, no false steps and taking on the block. If the centers head goes in front of the blocking dummy then the linebacker reacts to attack the cutback lane (sweep/off tackle).
Everybody has different techniques for how they do things, so I did not want to get specific about how to shed blocks.
