These are line backer football drills which I have used in several practices. The first one is a position vs. position drill which works with wide receiver vs. defensive back and running back vs linebacker. The other is for hand eye/reaction.

Position vs. Position Drill

It is very simple to set up, exercise and execute and adds a good element of competition. Everyone pairs off as above e.g. 1WR with 1 DB. etc. The WR lines up on the hash markings on any line. The DB lines up 3 yards behind him with a QB in the middle of the pitch.

On the snap, the WR runs a 5 and in while being chased by the DB (The DB can NOT cut the corner of the 5 and input a cone or pylon at the cup point.) When the WR has made the cut, he accelerates onto the football and has to reach the opposite hash marking before the DB catches him.

Therefore, the WR and DB work on their acceleration and speed and the QB practices leading receivers away from defenders.

Hand Eye/DB Reaction

Once you’ve done this a few times, add this drill for WR hand eye/DB reaction.

-The WR is facing the QB, and DB facing the WR (2-3yds separation).
-Have the QB throw the ball to the WR, while the DB reacts (watching the WR’s hands/eyes) swatting at the ball, attempting to force an incomplete pass.
