These two [tag]youth football drills[/tag] are favorites of mine. I think the one that does the most for my kids is called the Gate Drill. We do it everyday at [tag]football practice[/tag] and before every game.
Set up 2 cones about 5 yards apart from each other, then split the difference and put 4 more cones straight out from the middle of the first two. Then you have gate 1, 2, 3.
Show the kid the number of the gate to run through and the defender has to SHUT THE GATE. It helps with toughness and more so with tackling. I am sure there is a lot of people that have a different version, but this seems to really help my kids.
The next [tag]football drill[/tag] is a passing drill. It is excellent for teaching pass catching concentration.
Receivers run crisp routes, starting cones to insure proper cuts, running approximately 3/4 speed. A defender runs in the receiver’s hip pocket. The defender slaps, jostles and pulls jersey on the receiver as he catches. As the drill progresses the defender gets more aggressive, remembering that he should not physically impede the receiver from making the catch.
The goal of this [tag]football[/tag] drill is to get the receiver used to contact before, and while, making a catch.
