Youth Football Practice – Sprint Tackle

Here is an idea for a youth football practice.  If you are coaching 8-9  year olds, keeping their attention is sometimes a challenge. Here is a football drill to do at the end of football practice.

Instead of running wind sprints, run a drill I call “sprint tackle“. To start the drill, pick 3 players to stand on the 15 yard line, then all of the remaining players line up on the goal line between the hash marks. When the whistle blows all of the players attempt to run to the 30 yard line.  The 3 players on the 15 yard line start tackling other players, the last 3 not tackled get to start on the 15 yard line next time. Once a player is tackled he is now a “tackler”.

Do this football drill for about 15  minutes. Most players run around 20-25 sprints in this time period, and they have a lot fun trying to see who is the last man standing. AND yes, the last man standing has to try and go against the rest of the team, and no running out of the hash marks!
