I’ve gotten a lot of requests for youth football tackling drills. Here’s an idea that works well. Give this a try with your football team.
Coaching tackling and blocking at the youth level can be challenging especially as the year goes on and you are trying to avoid injuring your own players. Here is a football drill we use that really improved both the aforementioned areas while keeping our players healthy for game day.
We call it the “A” Game (variation of the A Drill used by AZ St.). You line up long dummies in an A shaped pattern (like a cone) starting with a set of straight dummies then angle them out gradually. Set up three lines: 1. First line by the straight dummies are O and D lineman, 2. Second line are the linebackers and your FBs/RBs, 3. Third line are you DBs and WRs.
You pick 2 to 3 backs to run the ball and line them up behind the first line about 5 yards deep. You have football coaches at each line who split the line into a blocker and a tackler. On the whistle the back runs forward looking for a hole through first line then once they break thru they are allowed to make any move they wish as long as they do not go outside the cone of dummies. Each line tries to block and tackle to continue or stop the play respectively.
All three lines are allowed to pursue and tackle or block as necessary until the coaches blow the whistle.
