This drill for one of the key assessments that a football coach must learn to make on his players was sent in by Eric. Use this to see how your players do with contact and hitting.A Football Coach

From Eric…
I like the West Point Drill, especially early, when the pads have just been put on.

You need to have four linemen, two on each side of the ball, one offense and one defense.  Next, have a LB behind the DL.  Have a HB and QB behind the OL.
Have one coach behind the defense to show the offense which way the play will go, and the count.  QB pivots to playside and hands the ball off.  OL drive block to create a gap for the HB.

This football drill also works with a FB and DB, and an extra OL and DL.  This is an excellent drill to see who likes to hit, and who shys away from hitting.  You can see if your LB is taking the correct first step, and see if the HB’s run over, or around the intended tackler.

Have the remaining team line up on both sides of the drill, it is fun and very intense.  Soon kids are jumping in to have a go at it.  Many times, some kids will just watch and not participate; this is a true warning sign that they do not like contact.  Its better to find out now, then later.
