I received this suggestion on linemen drills from Andrew. You’ll need all the help you can get from your assistant football coach to keep things moving on this one.
From Andrew…
I am a line coach and I work with offensive and defensive lineman. I wanted to come up with a football drill where I could get both groups working at the same time. I call it “the bull ring”.
Take a rope or PVC pipe and lay it in a circle about 10 feet in diameter. Place a stand up dummy at the back of the circle. This is the QB. Mark a line of scrimmage in the middle of the circle and have one offensive and one defensive lineman line up over each other.
On the snap have the d lineman rush, have the O lineman block…they each have 5 seconds to do their respective jobs, that is, get to the QB or protect the QB. They have to stay within the confines of the ring. Loser does laps, push ups, etc.
Coaching points:
O Line: good set up of feet, hands tight, firing “into the hole”, feet chopping, head up, butt down, protecting the QB
D Line: Butt up, weight forward, good explosion off the ball, arms locked out, feet wide and driving man back, get to the QB–or– use escape move (rip or swim), quickly engage, read, and release, get to the QB
This drill allows the coaches to work the O and D lineman in real game type situations. If you have younger players, you may want to give the 5-7 seconds. Make sure to watch their quickness off the ball, and their hand and foot positioning.
