When you are first starting out with your team you should teach them basic flag football plays.  Many plays that are more complicated stem off of the basics.  Therefore, it is important that you get your team to master the beginning moves before you try to teach them the tricks of the trade.Basic Flag Football Plays

One of the most basic flag football plays is called “Blast.”  This is a running play that typically goes through the middle of the offensive line.  The offensive linemen will block the players closest to them while simultaneously pushing them backwards.  One of your fullbacks will run in front of the ball carrier and block the first person that they can, which is normally a linebacker.  Then your running back will follow the fullback through the open area.  Although this is a basic flag football play it still requires skill and teamwork.

In flag football there are plays that are called “misdirection” plays.  “Counter” is a misdirection play and it is also in the basic flag football play category.  It is called a misdirection play because you will have your team lead the opposing team to believe that the play is going one way when it is actually going the other way.  At the beginning of the play, your quarterback will fake a handoff to the fullback.  At the same time, your running back will take a step in the direction of the fullback and then instantly go in the opposite direction.  When the running back executes the fake, the quarterback will hand him the ball.  This differs from the typical play because the running back usually runs in the area just left or right of the offensive action.  This may sound complicated but it is simple flag football procedure.

Sometimes you will need to have your team perform a basic flag football play that is short and sweet.  This is when a diving play will come in handy.  Diving plays are one of the few plays that you’ll have your fullback run with the ball.  This is a running play that needs to be done in a flash.  Your fullback will take a handoff and run straight into the offensive line.  You should not use a diving play when there’s a lot of yardage to cover since you’re having one player dive right into the line of fire.  If there’s too much of a distance that needs to be covered then your fullback’s flag is going to get taken and the play will be unsuccessful.  These types of plays should be used when your offense only needs a few yards in order to make a first down or better yet, a touchdown.

It’s vital for your team to master the basic flag football plays before they are able to learn how to perform the complex ones.  Explain to your team that these are bases that you will build upon.  There’s no building that’ll stand tall on a faulty foundation.
