I’m often asked for advice on coaching football and how to help players who may be struggling or who are rookies to the team.  Here’s a simple coaching tip that will pay huge dividends with your team.Coaching Football

From  Matt…
This is my first year coaching football, so I can’t say I’ve got a world of knowledge to share, but here’s one football coaching tip that I’ve seen make a significant difference.

To get the most out of those struggling on a team, sometimes just a little special attention in the right manner is all that’s needed.  We have a rookie this year that simply was having a rough go at it the first week in pads.  Instead of singling him out during football practice, I found small windows of time spend one-on-one time with him before practice, during breaks, and after practice.  No more than a total of 5-10 minutes on a given day, but it allowed me to connect with him and figure out precisely what was giving him the most problems.  It was stuff I don’t think he would have wanted to ask in front of the whole team.  He responded very positively to the attention, and really listened to the suggestions I had for improving on the basic skills.  The best part was, he never felt like he was given special instruction in front of the other kids, so the embarrassment factor never came into play.

There are others like him on the team we’ve been doing this with, but I also think this kind of time goes a long way with any kid.  As a coaching staff, we are now deciding which kids we’ll be spending extra time with each week and the returns have been great!
