Coaching Football – Receiver Drills

This is a football drill I use to force the quarterback to read all of his receivers and find the open man.  If you’re coaching football, give this a try with your team.  It can be done with or without a QB/center exchange.

Place 4 men at varying distances downfield, between seven to 25 yds.  I usually place one, near the sideline, to simulate a hitch; one man 10 to 12 yards deep in the middle of the field; one on a hash mark; and one man at 20 to 25 yds.

With their backs turned away from the quarterback, I signal the order in which they will turn to the quarterback to catch his pass. The QB does not know the order in which they will turn. He must scan all 4 players to determine which one has turned around. He must then complete the pass.

In my offense he does a three step drop before completing the pass. While there are no DB’s in this football receiver drill, the point is to allow him to scan the entire field to find the open man. Both the QB and the receivers really enjoy this drill.
