James sent in these drills for youth football that he uses with his team. Give this offensive line drill a try with your team and watch the improvements.
From James,
I coach midget and high school offensive line and it’s always a struggle to instill good drive blocking technique in our linemen. We’ve found that using the blocking sled to progressively reinforce good technique seems to work.
The football drill goes as follows:
• assign a lineman to each sled position
• initial position is with head on bag at chest level, hands on bag just below head but low, knees bent.
• on signal all linemen thrust hips forward and push up with hands lifting sled from ground. (This reinforces the techniques of using the hips to initiate the block and driving upward with hands into opponent’s chest)
• This movement is repeated a number of times. (note, during this phase of the drill, the sled does not move much across the field)
• The next step is to move the players back from the bags and put them into a three point stance.
• on the snap count, the players drive forward, make contact and repeat the
motions in the first part of the drill, (Again, the sled is lifted from the ground but doesn’t travel far across the field.
• The final part of the drill is to start in a three point stance, drive on the snap count, make the initial uplifting contact, but then drive the sled forward for a count of 5 to 10.
