Flag Football Drills – Hand-Off & Throwing on the Run

If you’re looking for more ideas for flag football drills, try this one. We use this football drill for our flag football team. It works on hand-off exchange, footwork, throwing on the run and speed.

Set up 4 cones to create a 20 yd x 20 yd box – then set up another set of cones in the same configuration as the first. Be sure to have at least 5 yds between the two boxes.

Split your players equally and have them line up outside the square, behind a cone closest to the other team’s box. The first player steps towards their opponents box and becomes the RB. (both players will begin running between the two boxes.)

The second player in line will be the QB. On the football coach‘s whistle, they will complete a handoff to the RB. They sprint forward to the cone, staying outside the cone. The QB then moves to the line to be the next RB, and the next in line steps up to be the next QB. They begin side stepping to the next cone; when they reach that cone, they will backpedal to the next cone. (Possession of the football is important; if they drop the ball they have to go back to the last cone and touch it before they can continue).

Once they turn the last corner, they sprint towards the back of the line and throw the football to the new QB, who then hands it off. The players make their way to the back of the line where they either sit or take a knee and wait for all players to complete the route.

You can mix it up by having them change the ball from one hand to the other at each cone. But, it requires them to think about alot of different things, while still moving as fast as they can.
