I got the inspiration for these football coaching tips from Fabian and from Tom. They include some fresh ideas on youth football conditioning drills. Try them out and let me know what you think!
From Fabian,
Here is an idea for a conditioning drill for younger players that they won’t even realize they are doing. Split the players up into two lines with a coach in front of each line 20 yards away. Use cones or something to keep them from cheating up. The coach throws a popup or a squibble kick and the player catches or recovers it and races to hand the ball back to the coach in their line.
The group/line that finishes first wins and the other has to do pushups, grass drills or something.
From Tom,
This probably isn’t original but one thing we do occasionally if they’ve had a good practice (defined as listening well and doing their best) is to play a baseball game only using a football. We set up the bases just like baseball but the batter actually attempts to throw the ball to an open spot or without having it caught. The fielders try to catch the ball for an out or throw it to the base before the runner arrives. No need to tag the runner we just want to practice catching the ball properly. 3 outs and then we switch just like baseball.
The kids really have fun with this and are practicing proper throwing and catching technique without it really seeming like “practice”.
