These football defensive back drills are a great way to get players to learn man-to-man coverage and to keep it tight.
What you need – Pair up wide receivers and defensive backs. Each pair should be fitted with a Velcro belt that has a rubber hose between them (about 15’ long).
How this drill works – The defensive back will line up giving the receiver about 5 yards (15’). The receiver will run a pattern and the defensive back needs to stay with the receiver during this football drill.
The belt (with the Velcro), will stretch a little bit, but it will unlatch if it is stretched too far. If your player is too far away on the coverage, then they will be too far away to defend against the pass. This is represented by the Velcro unlatching.
Coaches need to coach the finer points of staying with the receiver. They need to learn the proper hip swivel when a receiver breaks, and they need to open their hips when a receiver makes a break deep.
Result – If you set a penalty for breaking the belt, then you will get the player’s attention. They will learn to stay close enough to their receiver so they can be there to make a play on the ball.
