Take a look at this submission from Greg. A great example of football defensive back drills that can work with all age groups.
From Greg…
We try to teach our D-backs to read the eyes of the quarterback. One football drill we run is called the “box drill”.
We use four tackling dummies set in about a 10 yard box. One defensive back in the middle. Outside of the box we have a quarterback and one running back. The quarterback uses a three step drop, zeroing in on one dummy and making a throw to that dummy. The D-back has to read the eyes of the quarterback and break on the ball. He either has to intercept the pass, knock the ball to the ground, or tackle the dummy. Once a dummy has been thrown to, it is out for the remainder of the football drill.
After each pass, the D-back must return to the center of the box. To keep the D-back on his toes, the quarterback can run a draw to the running back; this helps to keep the defensive player honest.
This drill can be very rapid and it forces the defense to read the eyes. It also gives us a chance to work some tackling drills. After running this drill, we saw a great improvement in our zone coverage, fewer yards after catch, and we forced more incomplete passes and interceptions.
