Brad, one of my subscribers, sent this one to me last week. A great suggestion for football practice plans and drills that can be used with all ages.

This football drill was adapted from a drill developed at Arizona State University (hence the name).
This drill involves eight players on each iteration:
r QB
r RB
r Three offensive blockers
r Three defensive defenders
On the QB’s cadence, the RB takes a perfect hand off from the QB, and then must run with his eyes within the cones to avoid the would-be tacklers and race out the other end of the drill. The blockers can take their defenders in any direction, and the defenders must defeat the blocking and gang tackle the running back as quickly as possible. In one football drill, you get reps on the QB/RB exchange, the RB running with his eyes going full speed, blockers working on their base blocking technique, defenders shedding blockers and gang tackling.
At the end of the first iteration, the blocker becomes the tackler, the defender goes to the back of his line, and the next guy in line becomes the blocker. The running back goes to the back of the RB line.
You need to position football coaches around the entire drill to focus on individual battles and stress all the key skills. After several reps, we rotate the lines so everybody gets a chance to block and defend in both tight and wide spaces. Don’t forget to rotate the RBs into the blocking/tackling lines as well so they get their reps there as well…there are always players volunteering to run the football even if they aren’t RBs.
Great drill, especially for youth football because so many kids are engaged at the same time. Lots of competition…lots of intensity.
