Football Practice Plans – The Big Play Drill
One of my readers actually suggested this idea for football practice plans recently. It’s an idea that has livened things up quite a bit in my practices. Give it a try.
The” BIG PLAY” Drill
I find that this football drill works really well for our team. We like to have the players run sprints for a cool down at the end of practice. We normally run about 10 fifty yard sprints. At the beginning of each practice we let the players know that they are going to start out with 10 fifty yard sprints (or whatever the football coach wants to run) to run at the end of the practice.
Then all the football coaches involved in the practice participate in what we call the “Big Play” drill. The players understand the rules before each football practice begins.
This is how it works. For every perfect tackle, big hit, great run, good catch, and awesome hustle throughout practice in every drill, a coach will blow the whistle three times and yell out “BIG PLAY, BIG PLAY!” When that happens, we minus a sprint. When physical contact practice begins we usually give out these big plays, but as the practices get more intense and players begin to pick up the game of football, we tend to be tougher on the calls.
It helps the players get more involved and stay focused (if you just keep reminding them about the drill) during practice, because face it, who wants to run 10 fifty yard sprints after a good practice!
