Receivers need to be able to catch balls, even when the ball has been tipped, or if a defender has their hands in the way. Here is one of my football receiver drills whose emphasis is on developing concentration with your wide receivers.
What you need – You can do this football drill as a group of receivers, and it can be a fun drill. One receiver will be among the group, and that player is responsible for catching the ball.
How this drill works – With the receiver in the middle of the group, the defenders decide who is going to try to distract the receiver from reaching the ball. Only one can do this at a time. The others will stand stationary. The key is that the receiver does not know who is going to be distracting them.
The coach will blow the whistle, and the QB will throw the ball to the receiver. The ‘defender’ selected to distract will get their hands in the way, tip the ball (but not knock it down), but they will not contact the receiver.
This drill continues until the receiver catches the ball, and then the players switch positions.
Result – The receiver’s concentration through both the anticipation of a defender and through the actual pass will help that receiver maintain focus on the ball and help them catch the ball in traffic.
