One of my subscribers actually suggested this idea for offensive football drills recently. I’ve included it for you below. Give it a try and let me know how it works for you.
From Joel…
THE BRACKET is a linebacker drill which requires 1 football, 1 blocking shield, 4 blocking/tackling dummies or flat edged lane dummies for the bracket or lanes, and a fifth dummy to tackle at the end of the drill. This football drill conditions all aspects of a linebacker’s game.
Set-Up:
1. Establish 5 vertical lanes with the 4 mentioned dummies; each interior lane should be 36 inches wide. The outside edges of the bracket are considered lanes.
2. Stand the remaining tackling dummy 10 to 15 feet from the formation and in the center. Optional to place a football on top of the standing dummy.
3. A football coach or player stands at the top (in the direction of travel) of the first lane holding the blocking shield.
Drill:
The executing player starts at the outside edge of the Bracket (lane formation) from the Ready or Fit Position facing the coach or player with the blocking dummy. Upon command, the player sprints towards the top the lane where he will fight through one of the four of the most common blocks keeping the proper arm free to hook and tackle, while driving towards the next lane. As he reaches the next lane he will back pedal through this lane, and then side step shuffle to the next lane, where he will again sprint to the top of the lane and again meet the coach/player with the blocking shield, fight through the block delivered while driving hard to the next lane, and then back pedal through the lane. The player will then side step shuffle to the outside edge of the bracket and sprint to the top towards the tackling dummy where he will fight through another block delivered by the coach/player and then make a well-executed tackle on the standing dummy, ending the drill.
*By placing a football on the top of the standing dummy, a simulated fumble occurs as the player makes his tackle, and the player must recover the fumble.
**This drill should be rotated so that it is started from either outside edge of the bracket.
For more difficulty and conditioning, the executing player continues the drill by side step high knee hurdles over the dummies back to the start and repeats the bracket before making a tackle on the standing dummy.
