Purpose:
This drill focuses on developing pass rush moves, getting off blocks, and reinforcing the importance of playing to the whistle.

Setup:

  1. Players form a line just behind the coach.
  2. The first player in line grabs a blocking pad and steps out, turning to face their teammate.
  3. The second player in line gets into a three-point stance, ready to engage.

Player executing the 2nd of 4 consecutive pass rush techniques.

Instructions:

  1. On the coach’s movement, the player in the three-point stance explodes forward, using their primary pass-rush move on the blocker in front of them.
  2. The blocker extends their arms to provide resistance while allowing the defender to practice their technique.
  3. After the initial engagement, both players immediately turn around and re-engage. The defender performs their primary move again but to the opposite side.
  4. This process is repeated four times in total, alternating sides for each rep.
  5. Players with more than one pass-rush technique should incorporate their secondary moves during the third and fourth repetitions.
  6. After four reps, the players return to the back of the line, and the next pair steps up.

Coaching Tips:

  • The focus of this drill is on reinforcing proper habits at game speed rather than introducing new techniques.
  • Ensure players practice balanced movement and are equally comfortable going to the left and right.
  • Emphasize controlled, explosive movements to simulate real-game scenarios effectively.

Coaching Tips for Younger Athletes:

  • Simplify the drill by focusing on one primary move to build confidence and ensure proper form.
  • Use clear, encouraging verbal cues such as “explode forward” or “stay low” to guide their movements.
  • Remind blockers to extend their arms fully to simulate realistic resistance for their teammate.

Coaching Tips for Older Athletes:

  • Encourage the use of advanced pass-rush techniques, such as rip, swim, or spin moves, during the third and fourth reps.
  • Stress the importance of maintaining low pad level and proper leverage to maximize effectiveness.
  • Focus on quick transitions between engagements to improve reaction time and adaptability during game situations.
