My assistant coaches and I made the observation that especially young players (10 to 14 year old guys) have real big problems with catching [tag]football[/tag]s if the throw is not the best one. We came up with these [tag]catching drills for football[/tag].
The drills are as follows:
Let them stand in a line and let them start at “go”. You throw the ball really badly or just let it fall. If they are motivated enough, they will try their best to catch it though.
Another problem is catching the ball near the side line. That`s not only interesting for WR but also for CB. As a coach stand next to the side line and just drop the ball. The players have to catch it without crossing the line.
Another Tip: take a few tennis balls and have your receivers stand in front of the goal post. Throw them hard and they are forced to catch them from a close distance. After every receiver has a shot at this we put them behind one of the post. Their chest must be touching the post. We throw the tennis ball at them and they must try to catch them with their hands out.
The point in this is hand eye coordination and teaches the receivers to stretch their arms.
After a few rounds of these drills they will have improved for sure!
