I run this pursuit drill as a race. I call it the Bloomfield Blitz and when used as a competition, the kids get conditioning and learn an important skill at the same time.
One drill that has worked great in the years I've been coaching is the Heads Up Linemen drill. I'm sure most coaches already do this or a similar drill, but here's how we run it.
These two youth drills are ones we use at the beginning of practice. The first works on conditioning and the second one teaches them how to be aggressive and not afraid of contact.
One of the drills we use is that tackling circuit. I realize that when we give up touchdowns and big plays it is almost always due to poor tackling.
Here is one drill we have used with our youth football team specifically for our lineman, both offensive lineman and defensive lineman.
Give these two drills a try at your next practice. The Footwork and Balance drill is excellent for your running backs, wide receivers and defensive backs. The Quarterback/Receiver Timing Drill is great for timing pattern fun also.
Looking to improve your players skills with some fresh new drills? Here are two drills to add to your list that your players will love and hone their skills
Our most effective conditioning drill is our 5 minute conditioning “box drill”. 5 Minute Box Drill 4 cones make a box 20 yards x 20 x 20 x 20. The kids form a
One of my favorite defensive drills is this Pass Rushing Drill. Even though it is a defensive drill to work on pass rushing, the other linemen can work on their drive blocking techniques to counter the defender and this should make everybody that much better.
One idea that worked well for a young team (9yr olds) that I had coached was a simple drill to improve reps for the center QB exchange, QB RB handoff. We had some difficulties in our first games with these transitions, so I went back to a basic drill that I had used in the past and decided to spend 10 -15 minutes on every night of practice after water break following our quick drills.
This drill has been one of the best for teaching my backfield and LB kids to learn to hit as opposed to get hit. It is also very good for proper tackling and positioning. Even though I use this drill with my younger players, 8-9 year olds it works well for all ages.
One of the receiver drills I would like to share with you today is the Receiver Clock Drill. This drill helps you identify 'trouble time'--areas where a receiver has trouble catching the ball, to focus on for future practices.
I have a competition drill I use with my O-Line and D-Line. It works pass blocking and rushing the passer. The players are really into the competition, and it shows in our unit sessions of practice and on gameday.
I like to run this drill the first few practices of the season to identify who my ball handlers will be for that year. It is called "Deer Hunter".
This is one of the receiver drills the players and I enjoy doing often. This drill is a fantastic way to improve hand eye coordination and will improve reaction time. Receiver
This is an excellent football hand-off drill as well as a great pre-game warmup. Try it; you'll be pleased with the improvements. One Ball Handoff Drill Two Lines of players opposing each
When defending the deep ball, there are three basic ways you can defend the ball, ranging from the zone turn to the classic bat down. Learning each of these techniques will
