Purpose:
To develop a defender’s ability to read and react to movements in the backfield, improving their pursuit angles and reaction time.
Setup:
Players will spread out and form three lines. The coach stands about 5 yards in front of them holding a football.
Instructions:
- The coach snaps the ball, and the players explode off the line.
- The coach mimics a pitch wide to either side, and the players must keep their eyes on the ball and redirect to chase the ball down the line.
- The next group of three steps up, the coach resets, and the drill continues.
Coaching Tips:
- Emphasize running straight to the ball, taking the shortest line possible, and avoiding “banana” curves or unnecessary steps.
- Start with basic alignment but gradually incorporate stunts, such as slanting to the left or right when the ball is snapped.
- Progress the drill to include different backfield actions, such as draws up the middle or counters, teaching players not to overcommit off the line of scrimmage (LOS).
Tips for Younger Athletes:
- Encourage younger players to stay low in their stance and maintain good posture when exploding off the line. This will help them keep balance and control when redirecting.
- Teach younger players to always keep their eyes on the ball. Remind them to react quickly as the ball is pitched, focusing on speed rather than hesitation.
- Help younger athletes understand the importance of finishing the play by staying aggressive and following through until the whistle is blown.
Tips for Older Athletes:
- Challenge older players to work on their footwork, making sure they take precise, sharp steps when redirecting to the ball. No wasted motion should be allowed.
- Emphasize to more experienced athletes the importance of hand placement when engaging blockers, using their hands to maintain separation while redirecting to avoid being locked up by offensive linemen.
- Push older players to anticipate offensive plays better, focusing on reading backfield movements and reacting accordingly, which will give them an advantage in live game situations.
